Why Networking Still Matters: Reflections from the STA Drinks at the National Liberal Club
In today’s digital-first world, it’s easy to forget the power of face-to-face conversation. At our recent STA cocktail evening at the National Liberal Club, I had a fascinating chat with one of our members about this very topic. He noted that many younger professionals prefer emails over in-person dialogue—a trend I’ve noticed too. It reminded me of a time when a colleague, seated just a few feet away, would email me instead of speaking directly. I’d often reply by walking over and having the conversation in person. Why the hesitation? Because when we avoid real
conversations, we miss out on something vital.
Networking is more than communication—it’s connection.
Recently, a member reached out via social media asking about STA’s networking opportunities. The truth is, we offer plenty—and they’re incredibly valuable. Our bi-monthly meetings at 1 Moorgate Place feature talks by leading analysts are followed by drinks and informal discussions. It’s during these relaxed moments that I’ve gained some of the most practical insights in my career—from troubleshooting technical analysis software to navigating compliance challenges.
The wisdom in the room is real. STA members are generous with their knowledge, and these conversations often lead to breakthroughs you won’t find in a manual or online forum. Beyond advice, it’s about finding people who truly understand your challenges and goals. That shared understanding makes you feel less isolated—and more empowered.
And yes, friendships flourish too. At our recent drinks party, one member approached me to thank the board, saying that being part of the STA had genuinely changed his life. His gratitude was deeply moving—a reminder of the impact we’re making together.
If you’re interested in financial markets, trading, or technical analysis, I can’t recommend joining the STA highly enough. You’ll gain access to expert insights, meaningful connections, and a supportive professional community.
