These include our annual dinner, with its distinct list of speakers and the ever-competitive JP Morgan Challenge, which benefits the STA’s supported charities.

With Coronavirus we have sadly had to put a hold on social events but look forward socially gathering in 2021.

The STA celebrates its 30th anniversary dinner at the National Liberal Club – November 2016

Wednesday 30th November 2016

Current and former presidents come together

On Wednesday, 30 November 2016, the Society of Technical Analysts celebrated its 30th Anniversary dinner at the National Liberal Club in London, commemorating three decades as the industry’s guiding body. The STA is in fact the oldest professional body of its kind in the world – its predecessor, the Association of Chart and Technical Analysts, or ACTA, was founded in 1968.

“Looking around at everyone here this evening, old members and new, brings home to me just how far we have come since 1968 in expanding awareness and understanding of technical analysis and behavioural finance,” said STA Chair Axel Rudolph, FSTA MCSI. “Half a century ago, technical analysis was about as mainstream as witchcraft. Today, our discipline is accepted and welcomed as a vital investment tool in an increasingly complex financial universe.”

Axel was able to thank two of his predecessors for their many years of hard work. The STA’s very first leader Philip Gray, Chairperson from 1986-89, made an audio presentation to the 119 guests assembled, while the after dinner speech was given by Robin Griffiths, who chaired the society from 1989-92.

Robin reminded members just how much financial techniques have advanced along with modern technology. His first adventures with technical analysis involved laboriously filling in sheets of graph paper – the methodology predates modern computers and spreadsheets by many years.

Also thanked at the dinner were STA Head of Marketing Karen Jones, responsible for the society’s Marketing Committee, former Chair Anne Whitby and honorary Fellow Mark Tennyson d’Eyncourt. Axel also presented Karen with the award of Fellowship to the STA in recognition of her significant contribution to professional technical analysis and the STA committee.

STA Chairman Axel Rudolph FSTA presented the certificates as Luise called them up one by one. 2 of the new MSTAs present – Simon Gray and Guillaume Osouf – achieved Distinctions. Well done to all!

STA Annual Dinner – November 2015

Wednesday 25th November 2015

On Wednesday 25 November, the STA held its annual Dinner at the impressive National Liberal Club, One Whitehall Place. New faces and old friends gathered for pre-Drinks in the Smoking Room before sitting down to a three course dinner in the fabulous David Lloyd George room. This year’s guest speaker was Dr Greg Davies of Barclays Wealth, who gave an enlightening and entertaining talk on his speciality, behavioural finance.

The STA Annual Dinner also included announcing a new Fellow to the Society – Simon Warren. He has been instrumental in driving the STA forward, has made certain that the Society adheres to good corporate governance and always had the STA’s best interests at heart. He has recently helped modernise the Barbican library, put into place an investment committee and proof read the second version of the STA’s Home Study Course, all while being the STA’s treasurer for over a decade.

JPMorgan Corporate Challenge – July 2015

Thursday 9th July 2015

Despite Thursday 9th July 2015 being the first complete London underground strike in 13 years, STA runners weren’t daunted (though numbers slightly depleted) as they ran for charity at the annual JP Morgan fun run. Setting up team HQ at the Prince Albert pub garden, this was certainly not your typical financial gurus’ usual haunt.

Organised by STA executive committee member Tom Hicks MSTA and chairman Axel Rudolph FSTA, with vice chairman Charles Newsome MSTA one of the runners and Mark Tennyson d’Eyncourt FSTA manning the fort (built of rucksacks), the committee were out in force.

Told to strip and don fetching STA T-shirts, they obediently complied and posed to have their picture taken at the first ever STA event of its type. Superbly organised – and the weather couldn’t have been nicer – they set off in batches based on their own estimates of time to complete the 5.6 kilometre circuit. We are pleased to announce that there were no drop outs and no injuries.

A lovely and challenging evening was had by all.
